Barista resume examples

Write about the drinks, tickets, equipment and handoffs you actually handled. These fictional examples turn ordinary cafe duties into specific bullets without adding sales figures or invented speed claims.

What a cafe manager needs to see

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile of food and beverage serving and related workers covers taking orders, preparing drinks, accepting payments and cleaning work areas. A barista resume should name the parts you did, not imply that every cafe uses the same equipment or service model.

Separate espresso preparation from register work. Name tasks you performed, such as operating a superautomatic machine, dosing and tamping, or adjusting grind and checking extraction. Automatic-volumetric machines can still require dialing in; selecting a programmed drink alone does not establish that skill. Describe mobile-order handoffs if those were part of your shift.

Questions to ask before writing

  1. Did you work the espresso bar, brewed coffee station, register or pickup counter?
  2. Which machine tasks did you perform yourself, and which belonged to a lead?
  3. How did you check milk substitutions and ticket changes?
  4. What did you do when mobile and counter orders overlapped?
  5. How did you keep milk refrigerated and clean the steam wand between uses under shop procedures?
  6. Which food-safety and closing procedures did you follow?
  7. What could you verify from records if you wanted to include a volume or waste figure?

Before, the spoken answer and the rewrite

All speakers and situations below are fictional. The rewritten bullets preserve the answer's scope. None adds a number or a result the speaker did not provide.

Before

Made coffee.

The question

Which drinks did you prepare, and how did you check the recipe?

They said

I made espresso drinks and batch coffee. I used the shop recipe cards and checked the ticket for size and milk before handing the drink out.

After

Prepared espresso drinks and batch coffee using shop recipes; checked size and milk against each ticket before handoff.

Before

Took orders.

The question

How did you handle counter orders alongside mobile pickups?

They said

I entered counter orders in the POS and matched mobile pickup names to tickets. If a drink was missing, I checked with the bar instead of promising a time.

After

Entered counter orders in the POS, matched mobile pickup names to tickets and checked missing drinks with the bar team.

Before

Kept things clean.

The question

What cleaning did you do during service and at closing?

They said

I cleaned the steam wand between drinks under shop procedures. At closing I cleaned the pitchers, washed utensils and completed the sanitation checklist.

After

Cleaned the steam wand between drinks under shop procedures; cleaned pitchers, washed utensils and completed the sanitation checklist at closing.

Before

Helped customers.

The question

What happened when someone mentioned a food allergy?

They said

I checked the ingredient information we had and asked the shift lead about allergy requests. I did not tell customers our shared equipment was allergen-free.

After

Checked available ingredient information and referred allergy requests to the shift lead without promising allergen-free shared equipment.

Before

Stocked supplies.

The question

How did the next barista know what needed attention?

They said

I restocked cups and milk, rotated dated stock under our procedure and told the next shift about low supplies.

After

Restocked cups and milk, rotated dated stock under shop procedures and handed off low-supply notes to the next shift.

First cafe job or experienced barista

For an entry-level resume, use paid work, school events or volunteering with accurate labels and dates. A concession volunteer who took drink orders can describe order checks and cleanup, but should not claim espresso skills without using an espresso machine. State completed food-handler training only with its real name and current status. Requirements vary by location and employer.

For a senior barista or shift-lead application, replace vague leadership claims with the work you were authorized to do: train a new hire on recipes, open the store, assign stations or reconcile a drawer. Distinguish helping with stock counts from ordering inventory. Describe recipe calibration only if you actually adjusted and checked it. Tenure alone does not establish supervisory responsibility.

Questions

Can I write a barista resume without cafe experience?
Yes. Label school, volunteer and other work honestly. Describe orders, payments, food handling or cleanup you actually performed. Do not list espresso preparation as experience if you have not done it.
Should I put availability on my barista resume?
If the posting asks, state your actual availability. Do not claim open availability if classes or another job limit your shifts.
Do barista bullets need numbers?
No. A recipe check, order handoff or closing routine is useful evidence without a metric. Include numbers only when you have a defensible source.
