New grad nurse resume examples grounded in supervised care

These fictional examples show supervised clinical learning, not independent RN employment. Name your student role, the care you performed, and the supervision behind it.

Start with your actual license status

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook on registered nurses describes assessment, care coordination, medication administration, documentation, and patient teaching. These describe licensed RN work, not automatic authority for a student or graduate awaiting licensure. State nurse practice acts, board rules, employer policy, education, and demonstrated competence govern what you may do.

Use RN after your name only when you hold the applicable active license and may use that title. State the issuing jurisdiction and accurate status in a Licensure section. Graduation or passing NCLEX alone is not an issued license. A graduate permit or temporary authorization is not unrestricted RN licensure; identify its exact status and follow board restrictions. Do not claim compact privileges without confirming eligibility and authority in the practice state.

Label placements as Student nurse clinical experience. Separate simulation, observation, paid nursing-assistant employment, and licensed RN employment. An unlicensed assistant role does not authorize RN assessment, diagnosis, or independent care planning.

Questions to recover the clinical detail

  1. Was this student clinical practice, simulation, observation, or paid work?
  2. Which setting and rotation was it, and who supervised your care?
  3. Which observation prompted you to contact the RN, and what did you report?
  4. What charting did your instructor review?
  5. Which teaching did you reinforce rather than plan yourself?
  6. Which license or certification is actually issued and current?
  7. Can you describe the task without patient identifiers or unsupported outcome numbers?

Before and after, with supervision intact

Alex Rivera and all resume details below are fictional teaching examples. These answers describe student work only. None establishes independent clinical competence.

Before

Provided patient care.

The question

What did you do as a student, and who supervised you?

They said

During my medical-surgical placement I took vital signs under my instructor and assigned RN. I reported readings outside the unit parameters to the RN.

After

Obtained vital signs during a medical-surgical student placement under instructor and assigned RN supervision; reported readings outside unit parameters to the RN.

Before

Good at communication.

The question

What concern did you bring to the RN?

They said

A patient said they felt dizzy before getting out of bed. I kept them seated and called the assigned RN before helping them move.

After

Kept a patient seated after they reported dizziness and contacted the assigned RN before assisting with mobility during a supervised student placement.

Before

Used electronic records.

The question

What did you document, and how was it checked?

They said

I entered assigned intake and output observations in the clinical electronic record. My instructor reviewed my entries under the placement documentation policy.

After

Entered assigned intake and output observations in the clinical electronic record with instructor review under the student placement documentation policy.

Before

Educated patients.

The question

Did you lead the teaching or reinforce an existing plan?

They said

With my instructor present, I reinforced the RN's discharge instructions using teach-back and told the RN which questions the patient still had.

After

Reinforced RN discharge instructions using teach-back with the instructor present and relayed remaining patient questions to the RN during a student placement.

Before

Worked with the team.

The question

What information did you give at handoff?

They said

I gave my assigned RN a structured handoff about the care I helped with, changes I observed, and outstanding tasks. My instructor checked it.

After

Presented a structured student handoff covering assisted care, observed changes, and outstanding tasks to the assigned RN with instructor review.

Entry-level evidence and later progression

For a first role, put education, accurate license status, and relevant clinical placements near the top. Use actual rotation dates and verified hours only if useful. Name equipment or charting software only if you used it, and label simulation practice as simulation. List current life-support credentials with issuer and expiration when requested; a course you plan to take is not a certification.

A new graduate is not a senior nurse. Later progression may include a completed RN residency, a larger assignment within demonstrated competence, precepting, or charge responsibilities after employer preparation. Add those only after doing them. Student leadership, capstone work, and assistant experience do not establish independent RN assessment, delegation, or charge experience. Even licensed new graduates should distinguish precepted orientation from later assignments.

Replace every fictional detail with your own record. Do not copy this pending-license status if a license has actually been issued, or imply licensure by omitting pending status.

What not to claim

  • Independent patient assignments, triage, medication administration, or clinical decisions you only observed or practiced in simulation.
  • RN licensure, specialty certification, or compact authority you do not hold. Do not publish full license numbers on a public resume unless needed through a secure application.
  • Invented patient loads, clinical hours, reduced falls, or other patient outcomes. Describe your action instead.
  • Patient names, dates of care, chart excerpts, screenshots, rare identifying case combinations, or other protected health information. HIPAA and placement confidentiality rules apply to resume preparation too. Do not enter patient information into Hirova or another AI tool. Removing a name alone does not make a case safe to share.

Questions

Can I put RN on my resume before my license is issued?
Do not imply active RN licensure before issuance. List your degree and accurate application or exam status. Any graduate permit must be identified accurately and used only under the issuing board restrictions.
Do clinical placements count as work experience?
They belong in a clearly labeled student clinical experience section, with dates, setting, tasks, and supervision. They are not independent RN employment.
Should a new graduate claim senior nursing skills?
No. Describe supervised evidence now. Add residency completion, precepting, or charge duties later only if you actually perform them within your authorized role.
