Can AI write your resume?
The wording, yes. The facts, no. AI is good at turning rough notes into clear sentences and has no way of knowing what actually happened at your job.
Updated
What AI does well
- Turning a rambling answer into a short bullet that starts with a verb.
- Keeping tense, punctuation and style consistent across a page.
- Suggesting a more precise verb than “helped” or “worked on.”
- Reordering your bullets to put what a posting asks for first.
- Catching typos and repeated words.
Where it goes wrong
- It adds numbers. A model asked for an impressive bullet will often supply a percentage you never gave it.
- It promotes you. “Helped with” becomes “led.” Your part in the work quietly grows.
- It borrows the posting. Skills and tools from the job description appear in your experience.
- It sounds like everyone else. “Spearheaded,” “leveraged,” “drove cross-functional synergy.”
- It misreads the source. Dates, titles and employers parsed from an old file can come out wrong.
Check every AI draft for these six things
- Every number traces to you. If you can’t say where it came from, delete it.
- Every verb matches your part. Led, built, supported: say which one is true.
- Every skill is one you can show. You will be asked about it.
- Titles, employers and dates are exact. These get checked.
- It still sounds like you. Read it aloud. Replace words you would never say.
- The PDF is text. Try selecting the text. An image of a resume can’t be read by software or a screen reader.
A prompt that asks before it writes
If you use a general AI assistant, start with this. It makes the model interview you instead of inventing:
I’m going to paste notes about one of my jobs. Before you write anything,
ask me up to five questions about what I owned, who relied on it, how
often I did it and what changed because of it. Wait for my answers.
Do not add numbers, tools, skills or results I haven’t given you. If a
bullet would be stronger with a detail I haven’t mentioned, ask me for it.
Then write 3 to 5 resume bullets, each starting with a verb, each one to
two lines long.
Michigan State University’s career services recommend a similar approach: have the AI ask about your real experience and add nothing you can’t verify.
How Hirova does it
Hirova is an AI resume builder for iPhone built around that interview. It asks, you answer, and every fact waits for your confirmation.
- Import or start fresh. Bring in a PDF or a photo of your resume. Hirova reads it on your iPhone; the file is not uploaded.
- Answer a few questions. Three to five short questions about what you owned and what changed. Type or dictate, and skip any you like.
- See your words set as bullets. Hirova rewrites your answers as resume lines in a consistent voice.
- Check every fact. Each title, date and number shows the words it came from. Nothing reaches your draft until you confirm it.
- Export a PDF. A typeset, text-based PDF you can send from the share sheet.
- Numbers come from your words. Each one shows the phrase it came from. One tap confirms it.
- Vague stays honest. If you didn’t give a number, Hirova doesn’t make one up.
- Gaps become questions (Pro). When you tailor to a job posting that wants something you haven’t mentioned, Hirova asks. “I don’t have this” is always an answer.
- Drafts are labelled. AI can still get things wrong, so drafts say “AI-generated draft. Review before use.”

Questions
- Is it OK to use AI to write my resume?
- Yes, for the wording. You are still responsible for every fact, so check each number, verb, skill, title and date against what you actually did before you send it.
- Can employers tell if a resume was written by AI?
- What recruiters notice is generic wording and claims a candidate can’t explain in an interview. A resume where every line is specific and true reads as yours, however it was drafted.
- Will an AI resume builder make things up?
- Many language models fill gaps with plausible details unless told not to. Hirova is built against that: numbers must come from your own words, gaps become questions, and nothing reaches your draft until you confirm it.
- Is Hirova free?
- Your first resume is. The interview, the fact check and one PDF in the Minimal design are free. Hirova Pro, for tailored versions, cover letters and every design, costs $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US.
