What the hiring manager needs to see
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile of accountants and auditors, accessed October 17, 2026, describes the occupation's duties nationally. Use it to find relevant experience, not as a list of skills you automatically have. Employer policies and state rules may be narrower.
An accountant resume should say which month-end work you owned, which systems you worked in and where review sat. Name the entries, reconciliations and analyses you prepared, and say who reviewed or approved them. Preparing a schedule for the auditors is not issuing an audit opinion, and drafting a variance explanation is not signing the financial statements.
Team results need care. If the team shortened the close or passed an audit, name your part and describe the result as the team's. A reader who sees "Reduced close time" will ask what you did, and the honest answer should match the bullet.
CPAs are licensed by state boards of accountancy. Licensure requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting the education and experience rules of the state, and several states have recently changed those rules. Use CPA only once your board has issued the license, and give exam progress plainly, such as the sections passed. Other credentials, such as the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) from the Institute of Management Accountants or the IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), are different qualifications; list each by its exact name and issuer.
Moving up from recording and reconciling? The bookkeeper resume examples show that work, and the skills guide shows how to tie each system to a task.
Questions to ask before writing
- Which close tasks did you own, and in which system?
- Who reviewed or approved your entries, reconciliations and schedules?
- Which analyses did you prepare, and who used them?
- What did you provide during an audit, and what did the auditors do?
- Which tax filings did you prepare, and who signed or approved them?
- Was a result yours, or the team's with your part inside it?
- Which CPA exam sections, licenses or other credentials do you hold now, from which issuer?
- Which figures can you share without disclosing confidential financial information?
Answer with a specific shift, week or task. Name the system you used and who approved exceptions. If you cannot verify a count, leave it out.
Before, the spoken answer and the rewrite

Before
Did month-end close.
The question
Which close tasks were yours, and who reviewed them?
They said
I prepared the accruals and the prepaid amortization entries in NetSuite every month and reconciled 6 balance sheet accounts. The accounting manager reviewed and approved my entries before the books closed.
After
Prepared monthly accrual and prepaid amortization entries in NetSuite and reconciled 6 balance sheet accounts, with entries reviewed and approved by the accounting manager before close.
Before
Prepared financial statements.
The question
What did you prepare, and who finalized it?
They said
I built the monthly flux analysis in Excel, comparing each income statement line to the prior month and to budget, and drafted explanations for anything over the threshold the controller set. The controller finalized the financial package.
After
Built the monthly flux analysis in Excel comparing income statement lines to the prior month and budget, drafting variance explanations above the controller's threshold for the controller's financial package.
Before
Helped with the audit.
The question
What did you give the auditors, and which part was yours?
They said
For the year-end audit I prepared the fixed asset roll-forward, pulled the support for the auditors' sample selections and answered their questions on fixed assets. The opinion was the audit firm's work.
After
Prepared the fixed asset roll-forward for the year-end audit, pulled support for the external auditors' sample selections and answered their fixed asset questions.
Before
Shortened the close from 8 days to 5.
The question
The team shortened the close. Which part of that was yours?
They said
Over the year our team cut the monthly close from 8 business days to 5. My part was moving the bank and credit card reconciliations to daily matching in NetSuite so they were finished before the close started.
After
Moved bank and credit card reconciliations to daily matching in NetSuite, part of a team effort that shortened the monthly close from 8 to 5 business days.
Before
Did taxes.
The question
Which tax work did you do, and who signed the returns?
They said
I prepared the quarterly sales tax filings for 3 states in Avalara and reconciled them to the general ledger. The controller approved each filing, and the outside CPA firm prepared the income tax returns.
After
Prepared quarterly sales tax filings for 3 states in Avalara for controller approval and reconciled them to the general ledger.
Entry-level and experienced applications
For an entry-level or staff accountant resume, list your degree, accounting coursework and any internship with a public accounting firm or company finance team. Volunteer tax preparation, such as at an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, is relevant when labelled as volunteer work. Say which software you used on live books and which only in a course.
For a senior accountant resume, describe the reviews you performed, such as reviewing staff reconciliations or journal entries, the close areas you owned and the controls you documented or carried out. Say whether you reviewed, approved or prepared. Training a staff accountant is different from managing the team, and executing a control someone else designed is different from designing it.
Use reverse chronological order with real job titles and dates. Put current credentials in their own section with the issuer and status. Do not list a credential as earned while you are still preparing for it.

What not to claim
- CPA after your name, or a licensed-sounding title, before your state board has issued the license. Exam sections passed are not a license.
- A team's shorter close, clean audit or cost savings as your personal result. Name your part and leave the result with the team.
- Audit opinions, financial-statement sign-off or tax return signatures that belonged to a controller, partner or outside firm.
- Invented savings, error-rate reductions or dollar balances you cannot trace to a report and may not disclose.
- Client names, account numbers, nonpublic financial results or details of an engagement without permission.
Draft from your own answers
Hirova's iPhone resume builder asks about your work and shows the words each bullet came from, so you can confirm it. Keep client names, account numbers and nonpublic figures out of your answers. At launch, Hirova Pro will cost $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US, with no free trial. Hiring decisions remain with employers.

Questions
- How do I write a staff accountant resume?
- Name the close tasks, reconciliations and analyses you prepared, the system you used and who reviewed them. Add audit support and filings you prepared, with the approver. Leave out results that belonged to the whole team unless you name your part.
- Can I put CPA on my resume before I am licensed?
- No. Use CPA only after your state board issues the license. Before that, state your exam progress exactly, such as the sections you have passed, and do not imply licensure.
- What should a senior accountant resume show?
- The areas of the close you owned, the work you reviewed for others, the controls you carried out or documented and the analyses leadership used. Say whether you prepared, reviewed or approved each item.
